The Friends of Fort Ontario will sponsor the May 8-9 War of 1812 commemoration event at Fort Ontario State Historic Site. Dr. Harold Youmans will be the featured speaker and will present a program on the May 5-7, 1814, Battle of Oswego on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
The main entrance is to be used for walk-in emergencies from 4 p.m. Friday, April 16 until 7 a.m. Monday, April 19. Construction crews will be working over the weekend at the entrance on West Sixth and Oneida Streets that has served as the walk-in emergency entrance.
The purpose of the program isn’t to punish drivers. The mission is to educate them about the importance of not passing a stopped school bus – anywhere. Even though Operation Safe Stop has ended, we still plan to continue our aggressive enforcement of observed violators, the police chief said.
Council approves the start of planting of the trees. More than 30 applications have been made already, organizers said.
Darrell Peckham admitted having had sexual contact with a 14 year old boy four years ago. Peckham worked for more than a decade in the Oswego City School District as a social worker, leaving in 1992. He also was director of Cayuga County’s Big Brother program.
The voters get to have their say on the $74.8 million spending plan on May 18. There is no tax levy increase and no schools will be closed.

On March 21 three people allegedly broke into a west-side residence, assaulted a victim with a blunt object, and robbed the victim of various items. Police made one arrest the day the incident was reported and have been conducting an investigation to determine who else was involved. Police have identified one of the other persons as 39-year-old Mark J. Hewitt.
