The life and times of legendary Shawnee Chief Tecumseh, territorial claims and disputes in the Lake Ontario region, and Oswego’s involvement in the events leading up to the War of 1812 are among the topics presented at the sixth annual Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium scheduled for Friday, April 1 to Sunday, April 3.

Barclay Nominates Local Education Leader to Regents Board; Assembly Bypasses Oswego Educator
Assemblyman Will Barclay made the following statement today (March 8) after nominating Oswego resident John Sheffield to serve on the Board of Regents during a joint Senate and Assembly session in Albany. The Assembly majority are largely favored in the selection process and Sheffield was not selected to serve on the board.

Today (March 8), at approximately 8:16 a.m., State Police in Fulton stopped a vehicle traveling southbound on State Route 481 in the town of Schroeppel, for a traffic violation.

Local Business: Layoffs Would Be Certain if $15 Minimum Wage Passes Legislature
Assemblyman Will Barclay today (March 8) said that 64% of local business owners surveyed said they would have to cut jobs if New York adopted the $15 minimum wage mandate. Nearly 100 local business owners completed the survey. Respondents ranged from those who employ a small staff to those who employ as many as 200 people.

Coalition Aims To Curb Drug Abuse By Youth
Data from a survey conducted by the Coalition to Combat Adolescent Substance Abuse in Oswego County shows that alcohol is the main drug abused by youths in Oswego County. According to research from the coalition, the top three drugs of concern for youths in Oswego County are alcohol, prescription drugs and marijuana, with alcohol being the biggest concern.

Fulton Officials Schedule Public Hearing
The Fulton Common Council has scheduled a public hearing regarding a proposal to mend non-conforming use laws. The hearing is scheduled to take place at a regular council meeting after the public comment section on April 5 starting at 7 p.m. in the city municipal building, 141 S. First St. City officials say they’d like to amend the law to consider each property on an individual basis.

Committee Paves The Way For Ethics Board
Monday night, the Planning and Development Committee paved the way for establishing an Oswego city board of ethics. The full council will consider the proposal at its meeting next week. Mayor William Barlow recommended creation of the board to dispel the public’s perceived corruption in city government.

Granby Man Arrested For Alleged Theft From WalMart
On March 7, State Police in Fulton arrested James A. Bond of Airport Road in Fulton, NY for Petit Larceny, a class “A” misdemeanor. Bond is charged with entering WalMart on State Route 3 in the town of Granby and stealing a can of beer.
