The key to the Port City’s future could very well lie in its past. A public rally Thursday night to support a process leading to national landmark status for two key Oswego heritage sites drew hundreds to the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center. “The phrase ‘you are history’ has somewhat of a negative connotation to it,” said Jeff Grimshaw, chairman of the Fort Ontario National Landmark Committee. “However, for us it is a positive. We are history.”
Fred Sarkis visited Volney Elementary School recently. The 89-year-old businessman, World War II veteran and author shared his life story with the students. He hopes to convince the Department of Education embrace his story, to promote his non-profit program on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and have the chance to dance with her.
Dozens turned out Wednesday to pay tribute to Oswego’s veterans – past and present. This year marked the 97th anniversary of the first observance of Armistice Day. The best pay a veteran can receive, LTjg George Hoffman, the MC, pointed out, “is a thank you.”
Many Fulton community members stood alongside local veterans of all branches of service this Veterans Day (November 11) morning to recognize their services and express thankfulness for their sacrifices.
On Tuesday (Nov. 10), at approximately 10:47 p.m., members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to a three-car fatal motor vehicle accident on State Route 3, at the intersection of County Route 7, in the town of Hannibal. The crash is still under investigation. The name of the victim hasn’t been released
A generous menu of family-friendly activities will greet members of the surrounding community visiting SUNY Oswego during Thanksgiving break, thanks to an invitation college President Deborah Stanley is extending to the college’s neighbors. Skating, hiking, swimming, running, shopping and browsing art and books are among the selections during Cruisin’ the Campus at Thanksgiving from Nov. 25 to 29 at the college.

The New York State Police is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 4:37 p.m. on State Route 3 near the intersection of Florida Ave in the town of Volney. At this time the names of those involved are not being released pending notification of family members.
The Oswego Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 12:07 p.m. today (Nov. 10) at 220 W. Eighth St. According to fire officials, there was nobody home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
The Oswego City School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Dean Goewey, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will take the position of superintendent left vacant upon Ben Halsey’s recent resignation.
After careful consideration and a thorough interview process with Dr. Goewey, the board determined that Dr. Goewey’s appointment will best serve the interest of the district, while maintaining a continuity of leadership.
