The Oswego County Health Department Medical Director Christina Liepke, MD, announced today (Sept. 18) the confirmation of the first human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in Oswego County this year. The individual, who is an adult resident of the town of Albion, is currently hospitalized and is listed in critical condition.
On Sept. 17 at 11:14 a.m., deputies arrested Stephanie M. Suhey, 25, of R 106 Oak Creek Town Homes, Auburn. She was charged with fourth degree grand larceny, fourth degree welfare fraud and first degree offering a false instrument for filing, all class E felonies.
While the Charby’s 25th Annual Duck Derby fundraiser shelled out some big cash to the winners, the event drew in quite a bit more to benefit the Lions Club of Fulton. The Lions Club will use the money raised to help with the costs of its sight and hearing causes.
A number of factors were used to determine these rankings. In addition to SUNY Oswego’s placement in Most Focused for Communication and Journalism, the institution also scored well in Most Popular for Education, earning a #103 spot out of 1,325.
At this week’s meting, the Common Council approved seeking bids to have a new centrifuge installed at the East Side Waste Water Treatment Plant. It will require the professional services of a licensed engineering firm to prepare plans and specifications, and provide construction phase services for the project. So, the purchasing agent was authorized to seek a proposal from GHD Consulting for the work.
Current Oswego City Mayor, Tom Gillen addressed a group of 11 small business owners at Wednesday’s ‘Meet the Candidates’ event put on by the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce. Alongside Executive Director of the Chamber, Greg Mills, Gillen was the first of the three Oswego city mayoral candidates to participate in ‘Meet the Candidates.’
The Oswego County Health Department announced that one mosquito sample tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus last week. The sample was collected from near the village of Central Square and within the target area that was sprayed on September 4. “Mosquito populations are substantially reduced; however, those that remain may still be infected with the EEE or West Nile viruses,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang.
Eric Kingson, one of the country’s foremost authorities on strengthening Social Security, announced he is running for Congress in New York’s 24th Congressional District today (Sept. 16). Kingson is a professor at Syracuse University and the co-founder of Social Security Works, an advocacy organization credited with stopping recent efforts to cut Social Security. He pointed to the difficulties faced by Upstate and Central New York families and his common sense solutions as chief among his reasons to run in his announcement held this afternoon in Syracuse’s Thornden Park rose garden.
On Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 9:10 a.m., sheriff’s deputies arrested Susan E. Pool, 42, of 5 Gerdon Drive, Richland. She was charged with third degree grand larceny, a class D felony, third degree welfare fraud, a class D felony and first degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony.
The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators recognized New York Sea Grant Extension Recreation Specialist David G. White as the Northern States Boating Educator of the Year at its 2015 conference in Wichita, Kans., this week. White was recognized for his excellence in boating safety programming by the 20-state Northern Caucus of NASBLA.
