EBT Reform Stall Causes $120M Grant Loss

Stop Welfare Abuse GraphicA reform measure to halt use of Social Services electronic benefit transfer cards in strip joints and casinos was passed by the state Senate last month but the bill remains stuck in the Assembly’s Social Services Committee costing $120 million in federal aid. Bill co-sponsor Senator Patty Ritchie said, “Welfare benefits are intended to help those who have fallen on hard times, to feed their families and make ends meet, and taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be used to buy booze, cigarettes and lottery tickets.”

Best-selling author Bruce Coville, who has more than 18 million copies in print of his 103 books for children and young adults, will make the keynote speech for SUNY Oswego's Quest -- a daylong celebration of scholarly and creative activity at the college. Coville is scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. April 9, in the Campus Center auditorium. The session is free and open to the public, as are scores of presentations, exhibitions and demonstrations that day, most in the Campus Center.

Oswego Town Man Sentenced To Prison On Manslaughter Conviction

This morning (Feb. 26), the Hon. James Metcalf, Acting Oswego County Court Judge, sentenced Robert F. Moshier of Oswego to 5 to 15 years in state prison based upon his conviction for Manslaughter in the Second Degree, as well as 6.5 years and 3 years post-release supervision upon his conviction for Assault in the Second Degree.
