Oswego County Postpones Aerial Spraying Tonight

The Oswego County Health Department has postponed its plans to spray the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area today due to rain, wind and falling temperatures. “We may not be able to spray for the next few days,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “This is partly because of the potential for rain, but, more importantly, because of the significantly cooler temperatures.” Aerial spraying will resume when weather permits.

Parents of Special Children, Inc. Hosts Annual Barbecue

Dave Manley and his son, Jaden, 11, of Mexico enjoyed the day on Saturday at the Parents of Special Children, Inc.'s backyard barbecue. They are pictured inside a hot air balloon, one of the many activities families were able to enjoy at the fourth annual event.

Parents of Special Children, Inc. again hosted its annual barbecue at Douglaston Manor in Pulaski recently. This is the fourth annual backyard barbecue hosted by the Barclay family and has become a tradition for many area families who benefit from services provided by Parents of Special Children, Inc., a local service and social network organization for families that have children with special needs.

Oswego to do maintenance flushing on the eastside

The city of Oswego Department of Public Works Water maintenance personnel will be performing preventative maintenance flushing of the water distribution system on the eastside of the city starting September 23. The affected area will be south of State Route 104E to East Utica Street and from East First Street to the eastern city limits, starting at East First and Bridge streets.

More Evidence of West Nile Virus Found

The New York State Department of Health has notified the Oswego County Health Department that further evidence of the West Nile virus was found in two different mosquito pools that were submitted for testing on Friday, September 6. The Oswego County Health Department has postponed its plans to spray the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area today (Sept. 11). Weather permitting, aerial spraying will resume on Thursday, September 12.

Walking Tour of the 1814 Battle of Oswego Set for Sept. 21

Fort Ontario Superintendent Paul Lear will lead a battlefield walking tour of the War of 1812 Battle of Oswego at 2 p.m. Sept. 21.  The tour will begin at the entrance of the old stone fort and is free and open to the public. Participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Suicide Prevention ‘Stride to Save Lives’ 5K Walk/Run set September 21

Suicide is a national public health crisis. It is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 34-year-olds and the third leading cause of death for 35- to 44-year-olds. A local organization, SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices of Education – is planing a couple of events in hopes of lowering those statistics and raising awareness. “Stride to Save Lives” will be held at the college on Sept. 21. On Sept. 20, Kevin Hines talk at First United Methodist Church of Fulton. The suicide survivor will also be the keynote speaker for the “Stride to Save Lives” community 5K Run/Walk.
