Arts, Crafts, and Kites at Historic Fort Ontario Sept. 7

Kites will fill the skies over Fort Ontario in the city of Oswego during the Arts, Crafts, and Kite Festival Sept. 7.  The Fort Ontario event is one of the largest gatherings of kite fliers in State of New York. (Photo by Mary Ellen Barbeau, Oswego County Tourism.)The Friends of Fort Ontario will host an Arts, Crafts, and Kites Festival Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the spacious and historic grounds outside the old fort. Admission to the festival is free while normal admission fees will apply to those who wish to tour the old fort. Kite experts from around the United States and Canada and noted kite historian Thom Shanken will be on hand to assist kite fliers of all ages and abilities.

As college classes resume, Shineman Science and Engineering Center welcomes first students

Richard S. Shineman Science and Engineering CenterThe new state-of-the-art building is located in the center of campus, right next to Campus Center and the building it’s replacing, Snygg Hall. Shineman Hall is named after the late Dr. Richard S. Shineman who was a professor of chemistry at SUNY Oswego from 1962 to 1988. He was the founding chair of the chemistry department.

Dog Dies after being left in Car for more than four hours

State Police were called to the Red Cross Parking lot across from the New York State Fairgrounds shortly after 2 p.m. this afternoon (Sept. 2) for a reported animal cruelty case. When troopers arrived, they observed a male standing over a black Labrador canine who was seizing and barely breathing. Troopers attempted to cool the dog with water and ice.

War of 1812 Quilt Exhibit Opens Labor Day at Fort Ontario

Twenty-six quilts from the Great Lakes Seaway Trail War of 1812 Traveling Quilt Show are displayed at Fort Ontario State Historic Site from Labor Day until Sept. 29. The quilts are replicas of 1812-period quilts and were created by quilters from 11 states and three Canadian provinces. Every quilt in the exhibit has a story-card attached with interesting details about the quilts and quilt-makers from 11 different states and three Canadian provinces.

Muggy August Was Actually Cooler Than Average

Despite the humidity, August 2013 goes into the record books as cooler than normal. That’s right, cooler, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. The average temperature last month was a pleasant 68.6 degrees, but that is 0.8-degree below average. Gregway said, “Temperature wise it wasn’t a bad month. The humidity was a little tough at times.”

Oswego Port Receives Large Grant

UPDATE 5:30 PM:  Senator Charles Schumer has just informed the mayor’s office that the Port of Oswego Authority has been awarded a $1.5 million grant that will fund the construction of a significant new rail link at the Port. Senator Schumer was committed to working with the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx, to position the Oswego project for a TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant.
