At 12:45 a.m. today (Sept. 9), members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department, West Amboy Fire Department and Williamstown Fire Department responded to a fatal motor vehicle accident on County Route 17 in the Town of Amboy.
The average temperature was 71.8 degrees – 2.4 degrees above average. The total precipitation last month came in at 2.16 inches, which is 1.64 inches below normal. Since the first of the year, precipitation stands at 19.69 inches. That is 7.03 inches below average.
Oswego County Deputy Fire Coordinator Jack Cottet joined the Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department at age 18 after being around the fire service since age 10. Fifty years later, Cottet is still going strong.
Nearly 200 friends and family circled the parade grounds at historic Fort Ontario Friday night to pay homage to Kyle Rookey. Hundreds more, from Fort Ontario to Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo. (where Kyle was stationed) and beyond also remembered the 23-year-old Oswegonian who died Sept. 2, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, while serving in the US Army.
The Oswego County Health Department plans to conduct aerial spraying of the Big Bay / Toad Harbor Swamp on the north shore of Oneida Lake either Monday or Tuesday, Sept. 10 or 11, depending on weather conditions. The aerial spray will begin after 7 p.m.
SPC Kyle Robert Rookey, 23 died Sunday September 2, 2012, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan while serving in the US Army. Kyle was based out of Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born in Oswego and was the son of George E. Rookey and Carol Sue Slater Akers of Oswego.
The warmth moves out this weekend; Sunday will feel like the start of fall.
Kyle Rookey will be honored this evening (Sept. 7) at Fort Ontario. The candlelight vigil will get under way at 9 p.m. Organizers said they will share stories of Kyle first and then around 9:30 p.m. or so will start the vigil.
