Gemworld 2023 Returns To Syracuse July 8-9

The Gem and Mineral Society of Syracuse (GMSS) announces that Gemworld 2023 will return to the Exposition (Expo) Center at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY on Saturday July 8 and Sunday July 9. This year’s theme is “New York Rocks,” and the show will include various displays of rocks, minerals and fossils that come from the state.

DEC Announces State Campground Updates

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced new updates at the agency’s Adirondack and Catskill campgrounds ahead of the Independence Day holiday, which kicks off the busy season at State campgrounds. Changes include updating swimming policies for the 2023 camping season to specify unsupervised swimming at DEC campground beaches and extending the seasons at the popular Moffitt and Lewey Lake campgrounds. Lifeguards will continue to supervise swimming at DEC’s Lake George “Million Dollar Beach” and Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Areas.

Simple Steps to Swimming Safety

Summer is in full swing, and Independence Day weekend is going to be full of pool parties and beach getaways. Unfortunately, every year in the United States, there are an estimated 4,000 unintentional drownings, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Drowning is also one of the leading causes of unintentional death in children between the ages of 1 and 9, while children ages 1–4 have the highest drowning rates. Most drownings among children aged 1–4 happen in swimming pools. Many of these fatalities occur even with supervision. AAA Insurance has tips leading into pool season for parents and caregivers.

Local Travelers Head Out West And Toast Area Wineries

Independence Day weekend is here, and travelers are flocking to various vacation destinations. This year, AAA projects 50.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home for the holiday weekend, setting a new record. This year’s projection surpasses the previous July 4th weekend record set in 2019 of 49 million travelers.
