Robert Matteson died last weekend in Oak Creek, Colorado. He was 63.
Matteson, who grew up in Central Square, was well known in Oak Creek as “Cowboy Bob” and at the same time, he was barely known at all. He was said to be the small town’s only homeless person, but few there knew how he came to be that way. In Oswego County, his family knew that his time in Vietnam had changed him but after he suddenly left town, they could never find where he had gone.
His peaceful death in a garage solved a lot of mysteries.
There’s a wonderful article in the local newspaper there, called The Steamboat Pilot and Today, that gives Robert Matteson’s life its proper due and ties up the loose ends on both sides. It’s worth your time to read it.
A little bit of rain was barely an inconvenience for the crowd at Thursday night’s opening of Harborfest 22. The music started at 7 p.m. Thursday with Hotel California (a salute to the Eagles). And, after a short interruption for the official opening ceremonies, Live Wire (an AC/DC tribute band) kept Harborfest 2009 rocking and rolling. Scattered showers, some heavy at times, plagued the Hotel California concert; but the crowd continued to grow in front of the NRG Lakeview Stage. The crowd was massive, sprawling all the way back to the sidewalk in Breitbeck Park.
You couldn’t see it here, but it was impressive in Southeast Asia: A complete eclipse of the Sun, in which the moon slides perfectly between the Sun and the Earth, leaving a perfectly round corona of the Sun’s fire and a dark circle.
The eclipse lasted up to 6 minutes in some places. No one reading this today will see the next eclipse predicted to last that long. It will be in 2132.
We thought you might like to see some amateur pictures from the eclipse, courtesy of various photographers who post on Flickr. Click the story to see more photos, a diagram of the path of the eclipse, and a composite photo that shows a giant shadow on the Orient, from space.
There are new charges against Timothy Sheldon of Oswego, already accused of sexually abusing a child.
The Oswego County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday charged Sheldon, 27, of County Route 89, Bldg #371, town of Oswego, with new counts of felony sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

The Republican committees of 11 counties made their choice Wednesday. Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava of Gouverneur, who represents three northern towns of Oswego County, will be their pick to try to keep the 23rd Congressional District seat held by John McHugh.
Meantime, national Republicans rolled out the first wave of negative attacks on the man they think will be the Democratic party’s candidate.
For a day, it felt like summer in Fulton. A perfect day for the annual Rock The Block party downtown.
Bright sunshine beat down on a blockful of people, drawn by the promise of good music and good local food. But this party almost didn’t happen.
