Oswego Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dean Goewey presented a nearly 30-minute dissertation on the district’s proposed $63.1 million capital project at Monday night’s Common Council meeting. “The school board and I believe that this is a community project,” the superintendent told the council, adding that the district has been doing a lot to promote the capital project.

On Monday, December 10, State Police arrested Anardy Quinones, 34, and Jose M. Castro, 40, both from Syracuse, for Robbery 1st degree, a class “B” felony. Both suspects were arraigned in the village of Central Square Court.

The Port City and the Oswego Fire Department began a new chapter on Monday night. At the final Common Council meeting of 2018, Mayor Billy Barlow presented a proposed deal with firefighters to the City Council. It was unanimously approved. The new agreement takes firefighters through 2022 and wraps up the last open city bargaining unit contract to be settled.

Shane Broadwell, Chairman of the Oswego County Legislature, announced today (December 10) an expanded joint venture between the County, the Oswego County Industrial Development Agency and the CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity. The new partnership builds on a recent year-long effort by the County Legislature and the IDA to develop and adopt a Strategic Economic Advancement Plan for Oswego County.

Should admission to scholastic athletic contests be free? Well, that discussion came up at the last Oswego City School District Board of Education meeting. Board President Aimee Callen said, ”We want to build school pride and a positive way to do that is to do away with the gate fee.” Under “Items from the Board” Callen discussed behavior and discipline problems in the district and asked if the administration could at least start to address this in relation to language.

Some of those major moments in life come at the most unexpected times. This past week, Oswego native David Artz found himself in the National Cathedral Choir in Washington D.C. for the memorial service for the nation’s 41st President, George H. W. Bush. However, he certainly didn’t plan on being there.
