Fulton PD Bike Rodeo Gives Away Free Helmets, Bikes

The Fulton Police Department held its annual Bike Rodeo to give away free helmets and promote bike safety. Each year, roughly 100 or more children participate in the free event, said Lieutenant Ralph McCann. The event allowed children to complete a bicycle safety obstacle course alongside a Fulton PD Bike Patrol Officer to learn the rules of the road and safe practices while bicycling.

ARISE Ride for Ramps Celebrates 10th Year of Fundraising

The sound of dozens of motorcycles echoed through Fulton as the ARISE Ride for Ramps fundraiser celebrated its 10th year at Lakeview Lanes. A fundraiser for the Oswego County Ramp Program, Saturday’s (June 2) event began with a four-hour motorcycle ride and followed up with food, music, and fun. “This is a great event because it gives people access to their community. It gives people access to their independence. And we couldn’t do it without all of you,” Tania Anderson, CEO of ARISE told the bikers before the head out on their ride.

Fulton Submits Application For Third Round DRI Funding

Fulton city officials came together to discuss a final application submitted to the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council in the hopes of being the $10 million winner of the third round of Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) funding from Governor Cuomo. Having applied for the past two years, city officials are confident that this application is capable of winning. Joe Fiumara, the Director of Fulton’s Community Development Agency said the application is, “the best application we’ve put together so far without a doubt.”

50 Years Later: Hit-and-Run Kills Man Who Fatally Struck Carolee Ashby

Douglas Parkhurst, 68, of West Newfield, Maine, has been identified by local authorities as the victim struck by a vehicle at a baseball game in Sanford on Friday (June 1.) Parkhurst was said to have pushed children out of the way of the vehicle which resulted in being the victim of a hit and run. The driver, Carol Sharrow, 52, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter according to a report from News Center Maine. No motive has been established. Parkhurst, formerly an Oswego resident, confessed in 2013 to fatally striking four-year-old Carolee Ashby with his car 50 years ago.

FPD Awards Kayleigh Hotaling the Robert Parkhurst Memorial Scholarship

Kayleigh Hotaling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Hotaling, was presented with the Officer Robert Parkhurst Memorial Scholarship by the Fulton Police Department. Parkhurst was a Fulton Police Officer who was killed by a drunk driver in 1984. Each year, the department awards $500 to a high school senior who demonstrates the same qualities as Parkhurst.

My Hometown Banner Project Puts Schoolchildren’s Work Around Oswego

A partnership between SUNY Oswego and the Oswego City School District to showcase the work of young artists became a soaring reality as dozens of banners featuring the work of local schoolchildren now appear around Oswego. The latest selections for the project — and potential banners appearing around the city in the future — are in an exhibition running until June 16 in SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery. A free public opening exhibition will be held on Friday, June 1.
