Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today (July 2) announced ramped up efforts to enforce no wake zones along the Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River shoreline this weekend. Multiple state agencies are deploying additional resources to assist with local enforcement efforts, including a total of 20 watercraft and 42 law enforcement officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Division of Military and Naval Affairs, and State Police.

The three newest leaders of the Fulton Fire Department were officially sworn in to their new positions Thursday evening (June 29.) The ceremony came following the retirement of former fire chief Paul Foster effective the same day whose 32 years of service is included in a total of 155 years of experience retiring from the FFD within the week. Family, friends, community members, and fellow firefighters gathered together as the FFD swore in a new chief, assistant chief, and captain.

State Police Investigate Fatal ATV Crash in Orwell

The investigation has determined that at approximately 10:50 p.m., a 27-year-old man was operating an ATV eastbound on Gay Road when the ATV exited the roadway and struck a trailer, which was parked off of the roadway, at the end of the dead end street. The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending family notification.

Fulton, Aldi Set Tentative Date to Close on Site Purchase

Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. recently revealed the tentative date to close on the sale contract between the city of Fulton and international supermarket chain, Aldi. Aldi has adamantly expressed interest in purchasing the 2.2 acre corner lot of the former Nestle site bordering South Fourth and Fay streets. Despite a long running demolition process of the 24 acre site plagued with several interruptions, an anticipated close on the purchase is tentatively scheduled for July 5.

Alan Jones Denied Parole

This morning (June 30, Oswego County District Attorney Gregory Oakes spoke with an official at the Wallkill Correctional Facility, who advised that the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has DENIED the parole application for Alan Jones. In response to the decision, District Attorney Oakes stated, “I am thankful to everyone who wrote the parole board and joined me in opposing Jones’s release. I am relieved that the parole board listened to our voices, and I’m grateful that justice continues to be served.”

Fence Links Oswego To International History

A 10-foot length of forgotten chain link fence, nearly 80 years old, is steeped in American History. The fence that once encircled Fort Ontario’s Safe Haven is being harvested as part of “America’s Response to the Holocaust,” a display being planned at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington. Safe Haven was the only place of its kind in the United States during World War II. The fence was the meeting place for many refugee and townspeople.
