The 36th annual Fulton Memorial Day Salute is slated for this weekend, with the bulk of the action jam packed on Saturday, May 27. To start the celebrations, the carnival portion of the weekend will open Friday evening (May 26) offering carnival rides, games, and food. The fun will continue the following morning (Saturday, May 27) as the Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. running east to west through the city on Broadway.
Amid the hustle and bustle along East First Street Tuesday afternoon, the Oswego County Historical Society harkened back to the days when the Port City was a Mecca for the theater. Historical society members, city officials and other held a ceremony, dedicating a roadside marker recalling the site of the Richardson Theater. The program was hosted by Justin White, president of the society, and Rick Sivers, president of the Oswego Players and historical society board of trustees member.
New York State Police Machias have issued an AMBER Alert and is investigating a child abduction near Shelby Lane in Lyndon, New York. The abduction occurred around 5 a.m. on Wednesday (May 23, 2017) and the Amber Alert was activated the same day at 12:20 p.m. Information from NYS Police is as follows:
The Executive Director of the Fulton Community Development Agency, Joe Fiumara has announced the city of Fulton’s intent to submit for the second round of NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative funding. The DRI provides the opportunity for one municipality in each of the 10 regions across New York State to receive $10 million focused on revitalizing communities downtown areas.
The Common Council voted 5-2 to authorize the mayor to execute an agreement with three+one services to provide a financial analysis for the city and to approve the transfer of funds from the contingent account to pay for the service. Voting no were Council President Eric VanBuren and Second Ward Councilor Pat McLaughlin. When he questioned a representative, he “didn’t slake any of my concerns,” VanBuren said. “I had concerns that I didn’t feel were addressed.”
Sixth graders across the Fulton City School District recently completed a mini unit on Medal of Honor recipient Carlton W. Barrett of Fulton. Students wrote essays based on the prompt: “As a fellow Fultonian, I am proud of Carlton W. Barrett’s actions on June 6, 1944, because…” These are their stories.
The Oswego County Stop DWI Program has hosted mock DWI scenarios at all school districts throughout Oswego County since 2006 when the first event took place at Phoenix High School. Oswego High School held the mock DWI presentation last week as they do every year in May for the junior class while all other districts hold the presentation every other year for junior and senior classes.
From 1917 to 1919, Fort Ontario served as General Hospital #5 where sick and wounded soldiers from army camps in the U.S. and the fighting in Europe were brought for followup surgeries, rehabilitation, and convalescence. Ludwig Bemelmans, author of the Madeline books, served as a Private at Fort Ontario at that time.
For the fourth year, the Fulton boys’ lacrosse team paired with the Fulton American Legion to place flags on the graves of all buried veterans resting at Mount Adnah and St. Mary’s cemeteries. Put together along with the cooperation and guidance of the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc. and Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, the group has grown to incorporate more volunteers. This year, the Fulton Fire Department volunteered its time as several firefighters participated to help honor the heroes that have made the ultimate sacrifice. For the youth, veterans, firemen, all individuals who participated, the consensus was clear: it’s an honor.
