Once again, the Port City paused to honor and thank the men and women who fought and died for our freedoms. Members of the area veterans’ and service groups spent the early morning visiting various parks and cemeteries in Oswego and surrounding communities paying tribute to our nation’s veterans.
On Saturday, May 27, at approximately 8:15 p.m., State Police responded to a car/Amish buggy crash on State Route 3 in the town of Mexico. Three people were hospitalized, including a 3-month-old, suffering multiple skull fractures
The 36th annual Fulton Memorial Day Salute wasn’t halted by the early rain as hundreds of community members lined Broadway to watch parade entries go by one by one. The parade, organized by Cre8 Studios L.L.C., held roughly 100 parade entries. “Despite a rainy morning we had a great turn out for the parade both in participants and spectators,” said Heathe Jones of Cre8 Studios. Lawrence Macner led the parade as Grand Marshall as the 2017 Veteran of the Year, selected by the Fulton Veterans Council.
A large fire has destroyed at least two downtown Oswego businesses this morning (May 27). The fire was reported to 911 shortly after 9 a.m. by an employee of Paura’s Liquors. There have been no serious injuries reported. Firefighters from several departments continue to battle the blaze.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today (May 26) that a skunk has tested positive for rabies in the town of Minetto. A dog which came in contact with the skunk was up-to-date on its rabies shots and was given a rabies booster shot as a required precaution. There was no human exposure. “The rabies virus is widespread in Oswego County and across the region this spring, and we are continuing to receive new reports,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director.
Today (May 26), some 7,556 miles from Fulton, Tim Conners will start his journey to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro at it’s peak height of 19,341 feet, the highest point on the African continent. Conners, a 22-year-old Fulton native, is climbing the mountain as part of his fundraiser mission, MounTimPossible to give back to organizations he says saved his life and to share his mantra to “redefine possible.”
Roughly 15 people attended the first of two meetings of which the Fulton committee preparing the city’s second Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) application has solicited public input. Stakeholders in attendance included elected officials, residents, city committee members, and local business owners. The group was led through the DRI application process by committee members Joe Fiumara, Brittney Jerred, and Dave and Marie Mankiewicz, following a “think positive” theme.
After completion of all New York State assessments on Mathematics and English Language Arts, district officials in Fulton have an estimated outcome of participation rates throughout the district before the official rates are established with the NYS Education Department database.The assessments are given to students in grades third through eighth and the district continues to strive to reach a goal participation rate of 95 percent. Currently, the district overall estimates 93 percent student participation in both ELA and math assessments.
Novelis and Discovery Education partnered to develop a new aluminum recycling education program, “Life of a Can – A Never Ending Story.” Designed to reinforce the importance of aluminum recycling and empower students to be environmental stewards, the program offers digital learning tools for classrooms that explore the lifecycle of a recycled aluminum can and encourage classrooms to implement recycling programs of their own.
Army Capt. Catherine E. Smith has been named a recipient of the 2016 Gen. Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award 2016. She is one of 13 active-duty commission officers to receive this honor. Capt. Smith is the daughter of Debra and Frederick Smith of Henderson, N.C. (formerly of Oswego). She is a 2003 graduate of Oswego High School.
