Oswego’s Revival Continues To Grow

Historic downtown Oswego may have seen better days, but the mayor has a vision for the revitalization of its future. “We have a downtown that is rather dense,” Oswego Mayor William Barlow said. “We have some strong buildings that just need a little help. We have buildings that need to be renovated and vacant lots that need to be developed.” Some of these areas are being developed currently from different individuals and privately owned businesses.

Public Hearing Set On Proposed PFDs Local Law

The public will get its chance to wade in on a proposed local law requiring people in designated areas of the Oswego River to wear personal flotation devices. At Monday’s Common Council meeting, a public hearing was set for May 22 at 7:10 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The purpose of the proposed law is to promote water safety, explained Council Vice President John Gosek, the sponsor of the proposal.

ALDI Confirms Fulton Store Will Prevail Despite Contractor Abandoning Demolition

A representative of the global supermarket chain, Aldi, has confirmed that the impending store location in Fulton will prevail despite the city’s demolition contractor backing out of the commitment to demolish the former Nestles site in its entirety. “We will still pursue the Fulton, NY location with plans for a grand opening in late fall,” said Aldi representative Aaron Sumida, Tully Division Vice President.

Oswego County Continues Flood Mitigation Efforts

A Lake Ontario flood warning remains in effect for Oswego County until 11 p.m. Monday (May 8) due to wind conditions. West-northwest winds are expected to continue pushing Lake Ontario’s waters onto the shoreline causing significant flooding as well as beach and coastline erosion. The Oswego County Emergency Management Office is working closely with the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and Office of Emergency Management as well as local municipalities to monitor the situation and coordinate lake flooding mitigation efforts.

Fulton Sixth Graders Write About Hometown Hero

Sixth graders across the Fulton City School District recently completed a mini unit on Medal of Honor recipients and they were surprised to learn that a native Fultonian earned that medal on June 6 1944. Carlton W. Barrett was born and raised in Fulton and joined the Army in 1940. On D-Day, he found himself on the beaches of Normandy, France, under withering fire in conditions reminiscent of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.
