County Honors Retiring 9-1-1 Director, Approves Successor

The past, present and future of the county’s 9-1-1 department gathered at this week’s legislature meeting. Mike Allen started working for the county employed by the Highway Department in a summer job. From there, he worked at the landfill, then the energy recovery facility and then the Central Services Department. And finally, 9-1-1. He moved up through the ranks and became director. The person he succeeded, the county’s first 9-1-1 director, Robert Hayes Sr., is currently the legislator representing District 10. Hayes and his fellow legislators recognized Allen on his retirement. The legislators approved Kevin Pooley of Hastings as the new 9-1-1 director.

Phoenix High School hosted the Oswego County Olympiad on Thursday (May 11,) allowing hundreds of exceptional student athletes the chance to participate in friendly track and field competition. In its third year, Fulton native Tim Conners who narrowly defeated a life threatening cancer diagnosis as a teenager, kicked off the event with his inspiring opening remarks. Speaking to the crowd of 460 student athletes, Conners spread a message of perseverance, a lesson he learned while battling for his life and even after as he discovered how to operate daily life in a now sightless world.

Governor Announces Additional Mobile Command Centers To Assist Flood Victims With Insurance Claims On Lake Ontario

Governor Cuomo today (May 12) announced additional Department of Financial Services Mobile Command Centers will be deployed to the Lake Ontario region to provide insurance help to residents affected by the flooding. “As water levels continue to rise, we remain vigilant and continue to take aggressive action to protect the people who live and work in the Lake Ontario region,” Governor Cuomo said.

Traffic Stop In Syracuse Leads To Drug Possession Charges

State Police arrested passengers Tiffany L. Rothrock, 33, from 52 Kingdom Road, Oswego, and Edward J. Baker Jr., 38, from 122 Dickerson St., Syracuse, on several drug possession charges following traffic stop. On Thursday (May 11), State Police stopped a vehicle on Butternut Street in the city of Syracuse for a traffic violation.

Make-A-Wish Grants CNY Wishes, Enriches Lives

The CNY Chapter of Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases in 15 counties across Central New York and the community is a big part of the process. The CNY Chapter of Make-A-Wish grants between 75-100 wishes each year, with a lot of help from community members. Diane Kuppermann, CEO and president of the CNY Chapter of Make-A-Wish works with a close team of seven full-time employees, one part-time and interns in the Make-A-Wish office.

Faculty members and former students of G. Ray Bodley High School recently approached the Board of Education to share their thoughts behind the idea to implement a seminar course at the high school. GRB principal, Donna Parkhurst alongside Betsy Conners presented an opportunity to board members last month to instate a seminar course at the high school, a course with similar structure and goals to that of the advisory program. Teachers, Angela Ferlito, Teresa Hill, Ami LaDuc and Jennifer Reese used their own personal experiences as former advisory teachers to share the success advisory had as well as the success they believe seminar will replicate.
