Oswego Fire Department personnel were notified at 3:24 p.m. today (Aug. 13) of a building located at 19 E. Cayuga St. struck by lightning. A customer of an adjacent business reported the strike to OFD officials after witnessing it and seeing smoke. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to a non-structural section of the roof.
At 11:35 this morning, Oswego Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 192 E. Eighth St., near Oak Hill Park. Although no injuries were reported, one family is displaced due to the electrical failure and damage to the structure. The displaced family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
On Thursday (August 11), members of the New York State Police Computer Crime Unit (Troop D), assisted by ICAC Task Force, Onondaga County Sherrif’s Office, and the US Marshalls Service arrested 53 year-old, Timothy M. Hanson, of 406 Main St., Phoenix.
Several members of the Oswego Fire Department, along with a couple hundred of their friends, held a public rally outside City Hall on Thursday to raise awareness about the impending cuts to the department and the potential loss of services that may follow. “We are supported here today by not only our members, local firefighters and their families from across Central New York, other unions and members of the public,” John Geraci, president of the Oswego Firefighters’ Association, told Oswego County Today.” They have “a ton of support,” he said indicating the huge crowd in Civic Plaza, adding that there were several pro OFD signs around the city.
The Oswego Buccaneer Booster’s SOS Committee (Save Oswego Sports) has planned a huge clambake with the goal of raising enough money to reinstate the remaining sports teams that were eliminated from the 2016-17 O.C.S. D. budget. Thanks to the generous donations by the community, 100%of the ticket sales will go directly to the general fund to pay for these teams and help support athletics for this year and next.
At the request of Friends of Great Bear, Andrew York, a Boy Scout from Troop 119, Baldwinsville, as his Eagle Scout Project, designed a foot bridge across the Great Bear Springs Stream at Great Bear Springs Recreational Area. Andrew secured donations for materials and organized the work party, made up from scout volunteers, family and Friends of Great Bear.
Tipping fees at the Oswego County transfer stations and landfill have seen another increase after the County Legislature addressed the fees at last month’s meeting (July 14.) Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. said the city of Fulton will consider leaving the garbage business due to the $10 increase approved to begin January 1, 2017.
The Oswego Firefighters Association will host a public rally outside City Hall, 13 W. Oneida St., on Thursday, August 11, at 5 p.m. Local lawmakers will be attending a workshop inside City Hall at this time, looking at ways to make the appropriate changes to the proposed budget.
The fiscal year 2107 proposed budget is $47,886,284 for all funds, an increase of 3.87 percent compared to fiscal year 2016. As you know, the increase is primarily attributed to retirement and health care costs.
The sixth annual Hunter Arms Weekend will take place August 19 and 20 with the same historical entertainment expected as years past. The weekend draws guests to Fulton from all over including as far as Alaska to display, shoot and learn more about the historic Hunter Arms/L.C. Smith gun manufacturer that once thrived in the city.
