Herbicides To Be Used Against Invading Water Chestnuts

Starting next week, herbicide will be used to help eradicate water chestnut growth in parts of the Oswego River. Water chestnuts are an invasive weed that grows on the surface of the water on several CNY rivers. These plants create an obstacle to boaters and prevent swimming in many areas along local rivers.

Oswego County Health Department Reports EEE in West Monroe

The Oswego County Health Department was notified today (Aug. 25) that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus was detected in bird-biting mosquitoes collected Aug. 19 on Toad Harbor Road in West Monroe. Additional tests showed that the report of positive West Nile virus in the towns of New Haven and Albion earlier this week was negative.

Ritchie Announces $70,000 In Funding For In-School Drug Prevention Efforts

As students prepare to head back to the classroom, State Senator Patty Ritchie is announcing she has secured $70,000 to help enhance in-school drug prevention efforts throughout Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence counties. “The sooner we can teach children about the dangers of abusing drugs, the better the odds are that they will stay away from these deadly substances that have the power to destroy their lives,” said Senator Ritchie.

West Nile Virus Detected in Oswego County

West Nile virus was detected in samples of mosquitoes collected in two Oswego County locations, the Oswego County Health Department reported today (Aug. 24). The virus was found in bird-biting mosquitoes collected in the towns of New Haven and Albion, according to Director of Public Health Jiancheng Huang. Huang said people need to be vigilant about using insect repellent and take measures to reduce mosquito habitats around their homes.
