The small but mighty Phoenix community came together to address the devastating heroin epidemic hitting all over the nation, even in quiet, cozy neighborhoods like their own. H.O.P.E, Heroin Opioid Prevention Education, hosted a community forum at J.C. Birdlebough High School complete with an agency expo, multiple keynote speakers, and a diverse panel of specialists with a wide range in background and expertise to answer questions from the public.

Scriba Highway Chief Pleads Guilty; License To Drive Is Revoked

Michael Barry, the town of Scriba Highway Superintendent who was elected last November after failing to disclose his arrest for driving while intoxicated earlier that summer, plead guilty to a Class A Misdemeanor charge of Driving While Intoxicated in the Town of Brutus on June 8, according to the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.

Katko Legislation To Advance Designation Of Fort Ontario, Safe Haven To National Park Status Heads To House Floor For Vote

Today (June 15), legislation introduced by U.S. Representative John Katko, H.R. 4202, the Fort Ontario Study Act, was unanimously approved by the House Committee on Natural Resources. The bill advances the designation of Fort Ontario and the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum in Oswego towards National Park status.

Fulton Natives Publish Children’s Book With A Message

A recently published children’s book that deals with hate and bullying is especially relevant currently in the wake of the Orlando night club murders. Ann Marie Chalone-Leis and Patricia Chalone-Hardwick published the book based on the memories of co-author Gail Danziger Klein’s mother (Renee Danziger), an Auschwitz survivor.

Great Lakes Research Consortium Grants Investigating vitamin B deficiency in fish, harmful Algal Blooms, DNA testing of aquatic food web

The Great Lakes Research Consortium has awarded $44,819 for research projects that will investigate vitamin B deficiency in Lake Ontario fish, analyze a dataset on harmful algal blooms in nearly 200 lakes in New York State, and test DNA-based barcoding as a way to more accurately analyze the Great Lakes food web.

Oswego Council Approves Mayor’s WiFi Plan

Following a lengthy debate Monday night, the resolution was approved 5-2 with councilors Shawn Walker and Robert Corradino voting no. The WiFi service will modernize downtown Oswego and provide an additional amenity to visitors and patrons of downtown businesses, the mayor said. However, opponents believe the cost and length of the contract is prohibitive. And, some residents aren’t in favor of paying more taxes just to benefit the downtown district.
