Ticket renewals for the upcoming 58th annual Budweiser International Classic Weekend at Oswego Speedway August 29-31 will close at the end of business on August 18. Renewal forms have been available for reserved seating on all three days of Budweiser International Classic Weekend since last year’s running of the richest and most prestigious Supermodified race in the world.
With a fourth place finish in last weekend’s Novelis Supermodified main event, Otto Sitterly has regained the series point lead in search of his historical seventh Speedway title. Despite a point penalty earlier this season which withdrew 19 markers from Sitterly’s overall total, the driver of the Nicotra Racing No. 7 has rebounded, now leading championship runner-up Dave Gruel by 7 points.
In a year of first time winners at Oswego Kartway, Ron Ingison and Rusty Natoli added their names to the list last Friday night at the Bullring. Ingison, driving his No. 114 in Clone Heavy, would actually double up on the night picking up wins in the RJ Kart Sales Battle at the Bullring make-up main as well as in the regular 25-lap Chavis Motorsports main on Friday.
With 18 days remaining until the International Classic, the countdown continues with No. 18, Kenny Andrews’ “Cinderella” finish in the 1973 International Classic. Canadian Andrews was considered one of the heavy favorites to win the ’73 Classic, but disaster struck early on in practice on Saturday.
A total of five test sessions will be conducted across a four day span leading up to Oswego Speedway’s 58th annual Budweiser International Classic Weekend. All five tests will be run in identical fashion to the Speedway’s weekly Fast Friday sessions, with one car allowed on track at a time, and a $200 fee per car to test. Testing will be open to Novelis Supermodifieds, Pathfinder Bank Small Block Supers, Race of Champions Modifieds, and ATQMRA TQ Midgets.
This Saturday, Ingles Performance and VP Small Engines Fuels presents a night of fast, affordable, family, fun, racing on the Route 57 ‘High Banks.’ On the exciting race card will be the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, NAPA Late Models, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, A-Verdi Storage Containers 305 Sprints, Hilton’s Automotive Four Cylinders and the ladies race.
“With the amount of rain we have had plus looking at the forecast, all parties involved including stuntman Chris Morena decided there wouldn’t be enough adequate drying time to put on a quality show,” said Fulton Speedway general manager Cory Reed.
With 19 days remaining until the International Classic, the countdown continues with No. 19, looking back on Warren Coniam’s first International Classic win after Kempton Dates ran out of fuel. By 1977 Dates had matured into one of Oswego’s top pilots, having won the ’77 track championship, and appearing to be well on his way to an International Classic win in the late stages of the ’77 200.
With only one event remaining before Budweiser International Classic Weekend, the Pathfinder Bank Small Block Supers will be featured on Saturday with Twin 20 feature events presented by Oswego County Federal Credit Union and Bosco & Geers Food Market. Despite the division’s inception in 1992, Twin 20 features were not run for the Small Block Supers until 2005. That year it was veteran SBS competitors Dave Gruel and Mike Bond driving to victory lane.
