APW Afterschool Music Program Hits a High Note

PARISH, NY – When the school day ends the learning continues in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District.

<p>Parish Elementary School (PES) music teacher Michele Catania plays along with fourth grade trumpeters during a recent after-school instrumental music lesson. This after-school music program is in its second year at the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District and is funded by the district’s 21st Century Grant.</p>

Fourth grade students at both Altmar Elementary and Parish Elementary School are once again jumping at the chance to participate in an afterschool music program where they can learn to play an instrument of their choice.

The introductory and exploratory music program is in its second year at APW and is funded by the district’s 21st Century Grant and incorporated into each school’s Rebel Club after school program.

Students participating in the program are matched, based on interest, with a flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, clarinet, baritone or percussion instrument and participate, once a week, in a hands-on lesson with an instructor.

The students learn how to properly care for, clean, assemble/disassemble their instrument and also learn how to read music.

Funds from the 21st Century Grant purchased all of the instruments for each afterschool music program.

Student participants are required to purchase a $5 instructional book for their selected instrument along with any related supplies such as instrument reeds.
