The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Athletic Department held a baseball awards ceremony and end-of-the season picnic to recognize outstanding athletes, graduating seniors and thank family and friends their year-long support.
The picnic honored the graduating seniors and coaches presented participation certificates and individual and group awards.
Seniors on the team were introduced including: Chris Mitchell, Greg Palmer, Mike Pastella, Skylar Wheeler, and David Redford. Not available to attend the picnic was Jesse Buchanan.
A special recognition was made for retiring head coach, Jerry Cole, who, over the last 36 years has coached many high school athletic teams including: girls’ softball, football, basketball, wrestling, track and field and baseball. For the past 12 years he has co-coached the APW Varsity Baseball team, ending with an impressive 100-125 career record at the school.
“To say the least Jerry Cole has had a very positive impact on the lives of young men and women playing sports over the past four decades, and a positive impact on the baseball and football programs here at APW over the past 12 years,” said Ryan Cobb, co-coach with Cole. “On behalf of the APW Baseball Program, and all of the young men you have coached, thank you for what you have taught all of us.”
Coach Cole was presented with a special baseball signed by all of the current members of the baseball squad.
Upon accepting the ball, Cole jokingly said, “That will fit nicely in the golf cart, Ryan,” but got emotional saying, “Not much to say, except thank you.”
Bert Conklin, APW Athletic Director presented Cole with a Meritorious Service Award on behalf of the APW District for his “significant contributions to the Frontier League.”
“Thank you Mr. Conklin,” Mr. Cole began, and turning to the audience he humbly said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to spend time with your kids.”
