Fairgrieve Elementary School fourth-graders became leather craftsmen in the midst of learning about Colonial times.
Guest presenter Lisa Ascenzo of Tandy Leather in Syracuse taught students about different types of hide and what people can do with them.
She showed them how to make a colorful handcrafted bookmark with a piece of leather, a mallet, metal stamps and markers.
Fourth grade teacher Mary Sheldon said the students have studied various Colonial trades, including printing, shoemaking, tailoring and wig making.
Next, students will learn about farming and religion in the colonies as they learn to make inferences about life in Colonial times and relate those to life today.
