OSWEGO COUNTY – Valedictorian Maya Turaj, Years of dedication to her studies paid dividends for senior Maya Turaj, who was recently named valedictorian for Hannibal High School’s Class of 2026.
The self-described kind, funny, quiet senior has distinguished herself as a dedicated student and role model among her peers. During her time at Hannibal High School, Turaj has been actively involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities. She has participated in soccer, track and field, drama club, art club, National Honor Society, choir, and band, demonstrating both her versatility and commitment to the school community.
Reflecting on her success, Turaj said she is fortunate to be surrounded by a strong support network, including parents Katarzyna Gonciarz and Daniel Turaj, and noted she also has a strong personal drive to succeed.
“I’ve been successful because I keep myself accountable and ask for help when I need it,” she said.
She hopes that internal drive to succeed will serve her well following graduation, when she attends SUNY Brockport. Turaj plans to pursue a degree in nursing, with a long-term goal of becoming a registered nurse.
“I like helping and supporting people in ways that are not always noticeable,” she said of her future plans.
For Turaj, one of the most meaningful parts of her high school journey has been the personal growth she experienced along the way.
“This school has taught me how to work with many different people and grow strong relationships with my classmates and teachers,” she said. “It helped shape me as a person, being patient and helpful.”
Salutatorian Alan Stupp, Hannibal High School salutatorian Alan Stupp’s strong commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and involvement in school activities helped propel him to the top of his graduating class.
Following graduation Stupp will attend the University at Buffalo, where he intends to study economics or finance. He hopes to pursue a future career as a lawyer, though he also has an interest in actuarial science and statistics.
Throughout high school, Stupp has been actively involved in band, choir, jazz band, modern band, football, wrestling, Student Council, and the SADD Club. His dedication both inside and outside the classroom has made a lasting impact on the Hannibal High School community.
“I feel that my identity as a Hannibal Warrior is a big part of who I am,” Stupp said. “While the environment of being in a small-town school … is a big part of what made me who I am, the specific nature of Hannibal is a big part of my personal identity.”
Stupp describes himself as hardworking, caring, and studious. He hopes to be remembered by teachers and classmates as someone who always tried his best and stayed true to himself when it mattered most.
Alan is the son of John C. Stupp and Angelina Stupp and cited their support and encouragement as reasons for his success.
“The hard work of my parents, and their belief that I’d be able to go far in life if I worked hard enough has helped me get to where I am today,” Stupp said.
