HANNIBAL – On the night of April 26-27, 1865, the funeral train of President Abraham Lincoln passed through Weedsport, NY.
According to estimates, most of the people living in the area at the time were in Weedsport to witness the event.
John Lamphere, vice president of the Fulton Campus of Cayuga Community College, will meet with the Hannibal Historical Society on September 26 at 7 p.m. at the Community Center on Oswego Street to present “Lincoln’s Funeral Train: From Death Springs Life in Central New York.”
Lamphere’s presentation will be based on who might have been there that night.
Some people were there based on their involvement with politics, abolition and the Underground Railroad.
Others were directly involved with Lincoln, but had roots in Central New York.
Lamphere, a resident of the town of Oswego, specializes in the Civil War and that era.
He is a former full professor of Criminal Justice and History; is retired from the Office of Cayuga County Sheriff at the rank of chief deputy, after 27 years of service; and is a Gettysburg tour guide.
