FULTON, NY – On October 15, a dream will come true for one Fulton resident. Ever since Tom Moore Jr. was a teenager, he dreamed of owning his own martial arts school.
With the grand opening of Synergistic Martial Arts and Fitness at 554 S. First St., he will have seen that dream through to completion.
“It’s an honor to share what I’m passionate about with the community,” Moore said. “Martial arts has enriched my life in so many ways and I’d love to give that to someone else.”
Moore has been involved in the martial arts in some way since he was 16. He has reached instructor level in four different disciplines including Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate, Personal Defense Readiness, Irish Stick Fighting and Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do.
His curriculum is rooted in the belief that self-defense is for everyone.
Classes provided by Moore include Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do Kung Fu, Grappling, O’Dubghail Irish Stick Fighting, Sparring, and Zombie Decimation, which although just for enjoyment, is based on weapons training Moore learned throughout the years in Filipino Kali and Irish Stick.
“I believe we have a little bit for everyone,” Moore said. “Yes, ZDET (Zombie Decimation Team) is purely for fun, but it’s also rooted in actual technique. Those who come to that class are still learning useful skills, are still getting the benefits of focus and discipline, but just all wrapped up in the fictional reality of killing zombies,” he said. “It’s a way to reach a larger population and still give them everything I love about the martial arts.”
For those interested in fitness classes, Moore offers those too. His wife, Erin, is teaching Country Heat LIVE, a group dance exercise class set to country music, with plans to add more group exercise classes in the future.
Synergistic Martial Arts and Fitness’ Grand Opening begins at 11 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m.
Moore and his students will provide demonstrations in each discipline and a free Country Heat LIVE class will be given for anyone wishing to attend.
There will also be raffles and drawings throughout the day.
Moore hopes that everyone else will pursue and act out their dream too.
“I worked at Interface Solutions, INC. for 23 years and just knew I needed to make a change,” he said. “Life is too short to be doing anything other than what you love.”
