Each year, in cooperation with law enforcement agencies across the state, the Oswego City Police Department participates in Operation Safe Stop which is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, The New York State Association for Pupil Transportation, and the New York State School Bus Contractor’s Association.
This month, the Oswego City Police Department will again be participating in Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day for 2016, which is Thursday (April 21).
In addition, as part of the Oswego Police Department’s 2016 Traffic Safety Initiative, the Oswego City Police Department will be conducting enhanced enforcement efforts throughout the month of April and continuing periodically throughout the year, geared specifically toward vehicles that are passing stopped school buses in the city of Oswego.
Please remember:
It is illegal – and very dangerous – to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights, located on top of the bus, are flashing.
Flashing lights mean the bus is picking up or discharging students.
Most buses are also equipped with a retractable stop sign to serve as an additional warning device.
You must stop whether you are approaching the school bus from the front or overtaking it from the rear.
You must always stop for flashing red lights, even on divided and multilane highways and on school grounds.
The first-time fine for illegally passing a school bus is a $250 to $400 fine, 5 points on your license, and/or possibly 30 days in jail.

We’re still waiting after notifying the police department about the constant speeding on Munn St while speeders continually speed down Munn St. It has only gotten worse since the detour. Including our school buses. We have many students from the middle school walking in the street not to mention all the people running and walking with young children. Have asked for police to hand out tickets but haven’t seen any police yet. When someone gets hit by a speeder they’ll have one heck of a law suit against the city because they neglected there duties….
