Patriotic pride filled the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District on June 14.
Old Glory proudly waved in the sunny skies over Parish Elementary School and students inside the school participated in a program that celebrated our nation’s great heritage and honored those in the local community that represent democracy, freedom, and courage.
Flag Day is commemorated annually at Parish Elementary School with a program organized by school librarian Sharon Amyotte. This year’s celebration featured students in each grade paying tribute to the American flag through educational presentations, songs, poems, and historical facts.
Special guest Joe LaValley, from APW Middle School, and two fourth grade students, Luke Hamilton and Trevor Nemier, gave a special demonstration on flag folding that included the significance of each of the 13 folds.
Additionally, a group of local military veterans from VFW Post 136 were recognized for their service and given a roaring round of applause as a ‘thank you’ for the freedoms that they fought to protect.
The veterans included: Grover Britton, who served in the Navy during World War II from 1944-47; Robert Kennedy, who served during the Vietnam era in the artillery support unit in German from 1967-69; Bill McCullagh, Air Force 1952-56 stationed in Korea and Iceland; and Douglas Kaine who served in the Army from 1966-68 in Vietnam.
For a grand finale, students each waved a miniature American flag high into the air and marched around the gymnasium before heading back to their classrooms singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
