The 2015 New York legislative session is over and you will remember that we nagged you a fair amount to do your part to support legislation to help animals.
As always, not much of it passed, but the good news is that Senator Terrence Murphy, a Republican from the 40th Senate District (parts of Putnam and Westchester counties) is already starting to garner support for legislation that he has pending in the 2016 legislative session coming up in January.
Here is what he says:
“Any case of animal cruelty is not just wrong, it is sickening to hear about. I was proud to sponsor and support several key pieces of legislation this year which would protect our pets and ensure those who do harm animals are held accountable for their actions. I need your help in getting the Assembly to move on this important legislation by signing my petition. Specifically, this petition would reinforce the need to pass legislation which would establish a public registry of people convicted of animal cruelty; increase the penalty for those convicted multiple times of torturing, killing or failing to provide sustenance to a felony; make it easier to prosecute people causing serious injury to a companion animal; and modernize animal cruelty laws to promote consistent enforcement by law enforcement officials and the courts.”

Senator Murphy is not the only legislator interested in animal welfare and we will keep you posted about other initiatives from both sides of the aisle.
But this is an early and comprehensive effort and we think it deserves support.
