OSWEGO, NY – Oswego High School senior Rachel Clark has earned the distinction of being named as a “National Merit Scholar†in the annual National Merit Scholarship competition.
Rachel is the only National Merit Scholar recipient in Oswego County and upon graduation will be attending the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Stony Brook President Samuel Stanley Jr., in a letter of congratulations to the OHS senior, noted, “Congratulations on being named a National Merit Scholar.†Continuing he also said, “I am delighted to offer you our prestigious Presidential Recognition Scholarship in acknowledgement of your accomplishments.â€
Rachel is the recipient of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship.
Every finalist competes for these single payment scholarships, which are awarded on a state representational basis.
Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans.
Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist said, “Our school district is proud of Rachel’s accomplishments. Her attainment of a National Merit Scholarship is highly recognized and proves her personal motivation and academic ability. The competitive and strict review process stands as a testament to her skills, both as a student and person. Rachel will continue to do great things in her life. I speak for our entire school community of how proud we are of Rachel’s achievements thus far and know that she has, in part, been guided by our school system.“
OHS Executive Principal Patty Oughterson was proud of this award.
She noted, “The Oswego High School community is exceptionally proud of Rachel and her outstanding achievement in being selected as one of only 2,500 students in the country to receive The National Merit Scholarship Award.â€
Continuing she said, “We are honored that Rachel, who is an exemplary student, has been rewarded for a lifetime of dedication and motivation to be successful. She is the perfect example of the quality of education provided at Oswego High School and more importantly, the quality of the young adults that come and go through our doors. Rachel is the type of person who will do such positive things in her life that we will hear her name again and again.â€
Originally nearly 1.5 million students took the initial qualifying test with some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualifying for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship.
From this 34,000 commended students were selected and that was reduced to 16,000 students who qualified as semifinalists.
Eventually approximately 15,000 earn consideration as a finalist.
