PARISH – The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County will host a free literacy event, “On your mark, get set…READ!,” from noon to 3 p.m., Oct. 22, at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School, 640 County Route 22, it was announced by Carri Waloven and Jeanne Cieszeski, event co-chairs.
“This is our sixth year and we are excited to bring another wonderful assortment of activities and free books and giveaways,” Waloven said. “ We will be giving away free backpacks with books and school supplies. There will also be local authors, face painting craft activities, an art exhibit, and a sled dog presentation. It’s an event full of fun activities; all while stimulating kids and families too become more avid readers.
“In addition, we’ll have Mike Riordan, director of the Salmon River Visitors Center and International Sport Fishing Museum. He’ll be teaching kids and families ways to improve their fishing success with proven techniques and methods.” Riordan also wrote: “A Long Line of Twists and Turns,” a historical account of the B.F. Gladding Corp. and how it’s founder, John Gladding, took a small fish line business and made it the largest fishing line manufacturer in the world in 1966.
This year’s READ Event theme, “On your mark, get set…READ!” is the reading theme adopted by local libraries for their summer reading programs, said Cieszeski.
Among the authors scheduled to appear are: Pieter Gaskin, “Adirondack Luau”; Eileen Parsons, “The First Rose of Summer”; Benjamin Kellogg, “Noah and Logan Series”; and Margaret Streitenberger, author and publisher.
Families visit provider booths and learn information about the organization. Some of the providers participating are: Oswego County Opportunities – Head Start, Literacy Volunteers; Oswego County Library Council (11 libraries); ARISE; Fulton Rotary Club, CiTi Adult Education, Oswego AmeriCorps, Fulton Adult Literacy Program, and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department.
“The goal of The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County is to empower our community to build literacy in a collaborative, inclusive and comprehensive manner,” said Mike Egan, coalition chairperson. “The Coalition is dedicated to supporting and expanding literacy services so that people can work, the economy can grow, families can thrive, and our community can prosper.”
The LCOC is a growing coalition of more than 36 local organizations. These organizations work together to address the literacy needs of people of all ages.

An estimated 40 to 44 million adults in the United States demonstrate skills in the lowest level of prose, document, and quantitative proficiencies.

In Oswego County, close to 17,000 adults cannot read above a fifth grade reading level. With the help of volunteers, donors and advocates, the Literacy Coalition of Oswego County helps adults develop their basic literary skills.
