An annual tradition of fun and learning continued Friday when guest speakers, experts and animals flocked to Volney Elementary School for its Earth Day celebration.
Students in each grade level had a chance to view presentations and participate in a variety of activities during the day.

Animal experts were on hand with owls, parrots, hawks, dogs and reptiles.
Under the tutelage of wildlife rehabilitator Jean Soprano, students learned the differences between owls, hawks, eagles and other bird species.
To accompany a PowerPoint presentation, Soprano brought several birds with her, much to the delight of the students in the audience.
“We are so lucky to have experts come in for these presentations,” said Principal Lisa Garofalo. “This is an amazing experience for the students.”

While animals were a crowd favorite – from dog agility to a reptile show — students also had a chance to learn about topics such as electrical safety, rock formations, fishing and gardening.
For fourth grader Reagan LaPage, the composting demonstration gave her an opportunity to get her hands dirty and sort through leaves to examine worms under a microscope.
