OSWEGO – SUNY Oswego’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program office has opened recruitment for volunteers within the Oswego City School District to help with the Driving Books Home program.
RSVP encourages people ages 55 and older to apply who have a love of reading and would like to share this interest with children. Available assignments include a review of the books, categorizing books by grade level, reading to children and touring this summer with the Oswego Bookmobile.
Most of the positions are flexible and can be tailor-made to fit volunteers’ availability, though ideally Bookmobile volunteers during July and August should try to commit to the same day each week during the eight-week program.
“Driving Books Home” made its school district debut last summer, featuring the Bookmobile, designed primarily for children ages 5 to 18 and sponsored by Oswego YMCA, Oswego City School District, SUNY Oswego and Oswego Public Library. The vehicle’s free resources, materials and activities encourage independent reading.
