PULASKI, NY – Every summer whitewater paddling enthusiasts mark their calendars in anticipation of adventure on Oswego County’s Salmon River.
Four to five scheduled water releases each year raise the level of the river to create class 2 and 3 rapids as the waterway passes through downtown Pulaski. Paddlers gather at the County Route 2a boat launch around mid-morning, inflating rafts, making plans to shuttle vehicles to and from various river access points, and donning PFD’s (Personal Flotation Device) and sunscreen as they prepare to slip their craft into the rising river.
This summer’s frequent rainfall has filled the Upper Salmon River reservoir, creating an abundance of water to release. Recent years have been drier, causing the water level to be low enough to cause concern and shortening the paddling season.
Oswego County Today reporter Michael Johnson visited the river on the weekend of August 7-8 and captured the video above. The weather could not have been more perfect for paddling, with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s. The warm water of midsummer allowed for river runners to go with light gear, and many leisurely navigated the flowing stream, stopping frequently to rest and socialize, making the most of a day on the water.
Paddling enthusiasts considering a visit to the Salmon River should check safewaters.com/facility/42 for more information regarding safety on the water, and remember that a Personal Flotation Device is a must!
