OSWEGO – Riverside Artisans, a local art cooperative, announces the Oswego County Emerging Artist Program, in partnership with the Art Association of Oswego, and made possible by a grant by the Shineman Foundation in the amount of $1000.00. The program will provide developing artists with new opportunities to advance their artistic and business skills.
The partners developed the program in response to growing needs within the arts community for increased access to mentorship, professional development, and meaningful opportunities for artists at the beginning of their careers. While creative talent is abundant, many emerging artists face barriers to visibility, guidance, and sustainable growth.
The groups will work together to select an artist and provide access to a stipend ($750.00 over the course of the program), mentorship opportunities, exhibitions, networking events, all customized to the needs of the artist. “Our objective is to help them build both their creative practice and their presence within the broader community,” according to Shirley Baldwin, resin artist associated with Riverside Artisans.
The partnership brings together two complementary perspectives. Riverside Artisans contributes real-world, market-based experience from working artists, while the Art Association of Oswego offers a strong foundation in community engagement and arts education. Together the groups aim to create a supportive environment that will foster both artistic and professional development. Beyond skill-building, the program emphasizes connections, both in person and through social media. Shirley Baldwin said, “Through our work as a cooperative, we’ve seen how critical community, shared knowledge, and mentorship are to an artist’s success. This program is designed to extend those opportunities to artists who are still finding their footing.”
“This initiative reflects a shared belief that investing in emerging artists strengthens the entire creative community,” said Karen Ringwald, Co-President of the Art Association of Oswego. “By working together, we can create more sustainable opportunities for the next generation of Oswego County artists.”
Applications for the Oswego County Emerging Artist Program will open on May 15, 2026. Applications, additional details, and qualifications are available at oswegoemergingartist.com.
