  • Wednesday: 25 new cases
  • Thursday: 20 new cases
  • Friday: 29 new cases
  • Saturday: 19 new cases
  • Sunday: 23 new cases

  • Today: 25 new cases

As of today, all New Yorkers aged 16 and over are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The Oswego County Health Department, under New York State Department of Health guidelines, is vaccinating anyone 18 years and older. Proof of age is required and must be provided at the vaccination site. Individuals that are 16 or 17 years old are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine only and must go to a clinic where Pfizer is offered. Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are only approved for those 18 and older.

Note – Oswego County Today now reports the COVID-19 statistics weekly on Tuesdays instead of Monday through Friday. Our next report will be Tuesday, April 13, 2021.

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly briefing video. In today’s update, he discussed National Public Health Week and thanked the county’s public health workers and the community’s support.

“As we begin our second year of battling the biggest public health challenge many of us have ever faced, we must recognize that now, more than ever before, is the time to celebrate those who continue to respond to this crisis,” Weatherup said. “Every month, every week, day in and day out, for more than a year, our public health team has put their personal lives on hold and dedicated their collective energies to protecting our residents.”

He also discussed the universal eligibility for New Yorkers aged 16 and over. He reminded residents that those aged 16 and 17 are not able to get the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines which are approved for 18 and older; Pfizer is approved for 16 and older.

He said with more people now eligible, appointments will likely be made more quickly but to keep checking back if a clinic appears to be filled as some people may cancel their appointments.

Although more county residents are vaccinated, Weatherup said the county’s new case numbers are not decreasing as he would expect.

“The data shows that our daily positive case counts continue to be consistently higher than the pre-peak numbers that we saw before Halloween,” said Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg. “We encourage everyone to get vaccinated. There are now more agencies in the county that can administer vaccine… Everyone regardless of age and vaccination status needs to be proactive and responsible about preventing the spread of the virus.”

Weatherup also extended his sympathies to the loved ones of another county resident who died this past week due to the virus.

He also discussed the 11 p.m. curfew currently in place for casinos, movie theaters, bowling alleys, billiards halls, gyms and fitness centers will be lifted tonight. The 11 p.m. curfew for food and beverage establishments and the 12 a.m. curfew for catered events remains in effect. Both curfews will be evaluated later this month.

Notes: The total number of positive cases in Oswego County is cumulative since March 2020 and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

SUNY Oswego reset its numbers for the Winter/Spring 2021 semesters and does not include numbers from Aug. 12, 2020 to Jan. 1, 2021. Total cases reported include 205 past positive cases (experienced during the winter break: Nov. 2020 –Jan. 2021) of students residing off-campus, who were required to provide evidence of positive test results and recovery upon returning to campus.

The first two cases in Oswego County were confirmed March 22, 2020. missing or outdated ad config
