Three years ago Terri Rogers of Cortland got interested in competing in triathlons while she was in her mid-40s. She started training for the swimming, biking, and running events. Her training for her swimming was wherever she could find water–friends’ pools or the SUNY Cortland pool. Her biking sometimes was done in the very early morning or later evenings as she is a working mom with two children.
Her training has paid off as each year she competes she is cutting her times. One of her most recent events was the Musselman Half Iron Man Triathlon in Geneva where she competed with 875 others. The Musselman consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride through the hills and a 13.1 mile run. She bettered her time by almost 15 minutes from last year and completed it in 5 hours and 44 minutes to place 8th in her age group and overall placed 309 out of 875 and 65th out of 235 women.
Recently, with her sister, Michele Rebeor, who lives in Arizona, they competed in the AFLAC Iron Girl in Brewerton at Oneida Shores Park. This event was a sprint triathlon consisting of ½ Mile Swim, 18.6 Mile Bike Race and a 3.1 Mile Run.
Michele got interested in doing triathlons a little over a year ago after hearing of her sister’s accomplishments, so they decided to do some events together whenever they could. Her training weather-wise is a little more accommodating in Arizona but she has also has high heat to contend with.
The Iron Girl competition had 500 woman registered and both girls did extremely well. Terri, having more years under her belt competing than her sister, placed 8th overall and 1st in her age group with a time of 1 hour 30 minutes. Michele placed 219th with a time of 1 hour and 54 minutes.
Terri will travel to Arizona this fall to register for an Iron Man competition in Tempe next year where they will once again compete together.
Terri and Michele are former athletes from Fulton and they continue to be athletes in their mid-40s. Terri is married to Lelan Rogers, has two children, and manages the lab for the Cortland Health Center. Michele lives in Chandler, Arizona where she works for Arizona State University Foundation as Director of Women & Philanthropy.
