FULTON, NY – Two contracts down; one to go.
The Fulton Common Council agreed Tuesday to transfer $106,000 from the contingency account to the police department account to settle money owed to the officers, who are now working under a new labor contract.
The council recently approved a new four-year agreement with the Police Benevolent Association. The contract will provide employees with a 2 percent raise this year; a 3 percent raise in 2009 and 2010; and a 3.5 percent raise in 2011.
“It was similar to what we did with the CSEA,†Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward said.
The contingent transfer will cover the salary increases owed to the officers, retroactive to the beginning of the year. The PBA’s former contract expired Dec. 31, 2007.
“We are still negotiating with the firefighter’s union,†Woodward noted.
It will be the last of the negotiations with the three major bargaining units that represent city employees.
Resident Mark Aldasch asked if the city is projecting how much taxes will be affected by the salary increases.
Woodward said that once the city starts to develop the 2009 budget, the bottom line will factor in more than expenses.
“Once I figure out what the increases in revenue are, then I can (begin to evaluate) what the tax increase is,†he said. “You can’t just look at expenses.â€ÂÂ
Woodward noted that he will host a meeting with the council soon to discuss department head agreements, which are not covered through regular contract negotiations. Historically, he said that those salary increases fall in line with the increases received by the units that the department heads represent.
