Located at 808 W. Broadway Suite A, The Cornerstone Club anticipates opening on August 14 pending completed final phases of construction.

The Cornerstone Club will offer socialization opportunities, supervision, daily activities, and health and nutrition monitoring to any senior over the age of 65 suffering from a physical or cognitive impairment on a case-by-case basis.

Program Director Nicole Greenier said those suffering from the beginning stages of Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, or those facing physical limitations as the result of a stroke or other ailments, are examples of eligible participants for enrollment at The Cornerstone Club.

“This is a way to keep them busy, but not overstimulated. We aim to help keep people out of nursing homes for as long as possible and by offering this service we keep the adults socialized and active and offer the family members working as caretakers a respite from their daily tasks,” Greenier said.

All care-aide staff have various degrees and experience as Certified Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Assistants or in home health, however, the social club is not able to administer medicine or provide complete hygiene care to enrolled adults.

Staff will be able to provide reminders to enrolled adults for any scheduled medication intake and can provide some hands-on assistance in daily hygiene care such as eating, mobility, or showers.

Enrollment will be addressed on a case-by-case basis with an individualized plan for each enrolled adult based on their level of need and preferred activities.

Adults in care at The Cornerstone Club will be provided a nutritious lunch and snacks as approved by a registered dietician and can accommodate various diet restrictions.

Staff will work with adults in a one staff to seven enrolled adults ratio, however, the ratio can be adjusted to one staff to five enrolled adults dependent on the severity of physical or cognitive impairments.

The secure facility will provide a safe, engaging place for enrolled adults to socialize and enjoy themselves while at the same time providing family or caregivers peace of mind while they tend to other engagements or work.

The Cornerstone Club will be open Monday through Friday at 7:30 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m.

Scheduling is flexible for each enrolled adult to choose any days of the week to attend with rates based on half days as anything less than five and a half hours or full days as anything more than 5 and a half hours.

Payment can be made privately, through a managed long term care policy, on a spend-down or other programs, all as approached by a case by case basis.

Similarly, transportation can be arranged by family members or caregivers, or staff at The Cornerstone Club can help arrange transportation through a contract with Oswego County Opportunities or other programs convenient to each adult.

The club will open with a 14 adult capacity but Greenier is hopeful that the capacity will eventually reach 30-40 adults.

“We’ve done our research and it truly seems social adult day care is where it’s headed. It can help us keep our loved ones home longer while providing a break for caregivers without leaving adults home alone. It will hopefully provide a better quality of life for these people. There’s a need for it in this area,” Greenier said.

The need may become even greater for the Fulton community after St. Luke CEO, Terrence Gorman recently announced the closure of Michaud Residential Health Services effective around October 1, citing financial distress as the nursing home’s downfall.

However, St. Luke director of community relations Greg Osetek said the closing of Michaud and the opening of The Cornerstone Club are completely unrelated.

“This program has been in the works since early last year, they’re completely unrelated. The opportunity to locate the program in Fulton with Catholic Charities really just kind of worked out for us as we were looking for various sites. We just thought it was a good fit programatically and also in terms of access for the community,” Osetek said.

More information on The Cornerstone Club can be found on the website including enrollment packets, a typical day at The Cornerstone Club, an activity and lunch schedule, and contact information for program director Greenier.

“The Cornerstone Club is made possible by the generous support of The Richard S. Shineman Foundation and the St. Luke-John Foster Burden Fund. Community partners include Catholic Charities of Oswego and Oswego County Opportunities, Inc.”
