FULTON – Last week’s Fulton City Council meeting was a last stand fight for the residents living around the Abandoned Holly Drive Motel. As discussions continue regarding the future of the property now zoned C-2 (Commercial), Mr. Sherman faces critical decisions about its fate. Options on the table include renovating the existing structure, demolishing it, or potentially selling the property, as discussed in last month’s council meeting.

Local resident Mr. Merlino is a vocal opponent to the current zoning, presenting a petition with 80 signatures from neighbors near the Holly Drive Motel site. These residents are advocating for a zoning change to R-1, accompanied by a variance that allows for residential use. Merlino expressed a strong desire for community involvement in the decision-making process, although when pressed for specific preferences, he struggled to articulate a clear vision. He did, however, firmly state that the community is against businesses such as dispensaries or adult stores.
The regulations set forth by Fulton codes and New York laws provide protections regarding permits for certain types of businesses, particularly in proximity to schools. Given the building’s current state, which necessitates significant renovation or demolition, any plans will require approval from the city planning board before being advanced.
In a related event, the Town of Clay recently experienced community pushback when plans for a new McDonald’s were rejected following public objections, showcasing the influence of resident feedback in local development decisions.
During an earlier council meeting, Mr. Sherman noted the high costs associated with demolishing the current structure, especially due to the presence of asbestos. Since acquiring the property in 2023, he has yet to submit the required architectural plans, an essential for any work to be done on the site
