One Injured In Hannibal Collision

HANNIBAL, NY – A Martville man sustained minor injuries Monday after his vehicle collided with a tow truck at a Hannibal intersection.

It was the same intersection where a man was killed in a motor-vehicle accident two weeks earlier.

New York State Police officer Phil Cady explained that 64-year-old Joseph Kanaley of Martville was driving his 1995 GMC southbound on county Route 34 in the town of Hannibal just after 11 a.m., Monday.

“He stopped at the stop sign at state Route 104 and entered 104 in the path of a 2005 Ford tow truck,” Cady explained.

The tow truck, operated by 46-year-old Lawrence Curtis, also of Martville, was traveling westbound on state Route 104 when the vehicles collided.

Curtis was not injured. Kanaley was transported to A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton for non life-threatening injuries.

Two weeks ago today, Robert E. Anthony, 81, of 85 county Route 55, Fulton, was traveling southbound on county Route 34 and failed to stop at the stop sign and flashing signal device at the state Route 104 intersection. Anthony’s vehicle was subsequently struck in the driver’s side door by a 1998 Chevrolet van that was traveling westbound on state Route 104, operated by Charles Simmons, 72, of 8 Arnett Boulevard, Rochester.

Anthony was later pronounced dead at Lee Memorial. Simmons and his passenger were transported to Syracuse area hospitals by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

Much like the intersection at state Routes 3 and 104 in Hannibal, the intersection at Routes 34 and 104 is known for accidents. Cady noted, however, there is clear visibility from all sides of travel.

“There have been a lot of accidents there over the years,” Cady said. “It is a busy intersection… there is a higher frequency of accidents.”

Kanaley was ticketed Monday for failure to yield the right of way. missing or outdated ad config
