Traffic Notice: Portion of State Route 481 To Close for Ongoing Nestle Demolition

The remaining two structures lining State Route 481 are scheduled for demolition, causing partial closure of State Route 481 on Thursday Sept. 14 and Friday Sept. 15 from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.

FULTON, NY – A stretch of State Route 481 in Fulton is scheduled to be closed to all lanes of traffic on Thursday, September 14, and Friday, September 15, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.

A detour will direct traffic both north and southbound off of State Route 481 onto South First Street.

Northbound traffic will divert onto South First Street at Prime Auto, the former Chevrolet dealership, and take Division Street to return to State Route 481.

Southbound traffic will turn off of State Route 481 onto Division and then follow South First Street until returning to State Route 481 at Prime Auto.

Local law enforcement and city officials are encouraging anyone who may have to travel this route to avoid the detour if possible or plan accordingly for possible delays.

The remaining two structures lining State Route 481 are scheduled for demolition, causing partial closure of State Route 481 on Thursday Sept. 14 and Friday Sept. 15 from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.

State Route 481 will be open to local traffic for access to businesses along this route with the exception of the Century 21 Real Estate office.

Members of the Fulton City Police Department will be present during the detour to direct traffic.

The detour will direct traffic away from State Route 481 as the remaining buildings of the former Nestle site within a close proximity to State Route 481 are demolished.

“We met with the (New York) State Department of Transportation and they want both lanes closed,” Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. said, noting that demolishing the remaining structures lining State Route 481 would be potentially dangerous to any traffic on the route as the buildings stand four stories tall and are already compromised, leaving a possibility for any falling structures to strike passing vehicles.

The demolition of buildings #2 and #4a that line State Route 481, to be completed by Rowlee Construction, is not anticipated to take longer than two days.

As per successful demolition of these buildings, only four structures will remain standing of what was once a thriving Fulton factory site producing Nestle chocolate.

Rowlee Construction will have until December 31, 2017 to demolish the remaining buildings.

At that time, the city will stand completely free of the several buildings that housed the Nestle factory in Fulton for more than 100 years before it’s closure in 2003.

Mayor Woodward has declared his intention to leave one original structure to the factory standing as it is in fair enough condition to be transformed into a museum dedicated to Nestle and Fulton’s rich industrial history.

The remaining structures of the former Nestle factory expected to be completely demolished by the end of the year with the exception of one building in which city officials intend to make a museum dedicated to Nestle and the city’s rich industrial history.

Memorabilia housed in the Mayor’s office and with the Friends of Fulton History at the John Wells Pratt House would be preserved in the museum.

Since the city acquired the 24-acre property on tax foreclosure in 2015, work has been underway to rid the city of the dilapidated structures that remained on the site.

“Congratulations on where we’re going with the Nestle project,” county legislator Jim Karasek said to the Fulton Common Council. “I’m finally hearing a lot of county wide positive feedback.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” Woodward said, adding that demolition is right on schedule.

  1. 2015? Been a lot longer than that.. they are talking about that African Chocolate company they “sold it to”. How many people a year do you think are going to visit that museum that we have to pay for? Heat, maintenance.. ect.. Stop spending our money on stupid stuff. Fix our roads, fix our sidewalks. Sell the building in a real sale, not a city contingent sale. Let someone else do what they want with it. Or tear it down, enough is enough with this damn complex. You need to lower property taxes, not collect more to open a stupid museum that will only be good for school tours, of a business that used to be here.. There is no rich industry in Fulton.
