Oswego Hospital Awarded $14.4 Million in HEAL NY Funds

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Hospital learned Tuesday it has been awarded $14.4 million in grant funds that enable the health care facility to make improvements to several key hospital departments in order to support the future healthcare needs of residents in Oswego County.

The funding, called HEAL NY (Healthcare Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers) is designated to meet the mandates of the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, more commonly known as the Berger Commission.

“This is one of the best things to happen to healthcare in Oswego County,” said Oswego Health President and CEO Ann C. Gilpin. “Our organization is extremely appreciative of Commissioner Daines, (M.D.) and the State Department of Health for the grant,” she said “This funding will support Oswego Health’s vision to continue providing exceptional care in our community.”

The grant further permits Oswego Hospital to add state-of-the-art technology and offer its services in more comfortable surroundings.

A major aspect of the project is the renovation of Oswego Hospital’s emergency and radiology departments. It will also allow the hospital to create a six-bed intermediate unit that provides care to patients who are not as critical as those in the intensive care unit.

Construction plans for the emergency department call for an addition of nearly 4,000 square feet. The number of patient rooms will increase from 11 to 20, including a six-room ‘fast track’ area.

Meanwhile, the radiology department will nearly double in size during the construction project to meet an expected increased demand for its services.

In order to expand its emergency and radiology departments, the adjacent hospital laboratory will be relocated to a much larger facility on the hospital’s third floor.

The final area to be renovated is located just off the hospital lobby. Plans for this area include an upgraded admissions department, as well as improvements to the Auxiliary-operated snack bar.

“These grant funds allow Oswego Health to provide the highest level of technology to our growing physician team,” said Oswego Health Board Chair Nancy Bellow. “With this funding, we are better positioned to make the improvements to our healthcare system that are estimated to cost tens of millions of dollars over the next five to ten years. The NYS Department of Health has made a commitment to providing high quality healthcare in the county through its support of Oswego Health.”
