Class Of 2014 Gets Jump On School Year

OSWEGO, NY – Approximately 375 freshmen got their first lessons at Oswego High School on Monday.

The OHS Class of 2014 was welcomed by administration, teachers and students for the annual freshmen orientation.

“This is really a great turnout,” exclaimed (interim) OHS Principal Brian Hartwell as he greeted the school’s newest students and their parents. “Seems like we almost the entire freshman class here.”

Students received their 2010-11 class schedules and supplies list.

“The students can meet with their guidance counselors tonight and also have their photos taken for their student ID badges,” the principal said.

He estimates the Class of 2014 to be about 350 – 375.

“We get so many transfers this time of year, that number can fluctuate up and down,” he said. “But, I’d say it’s in the neighborhood of 350 maybe as high as 375.”

Tours were conducted by members of the National Honor Society and various clubs and school organizations had informational tables set up in the cafeteria to solicit potential new members.

Students and their families could also relax and enjoy a picnic style dinner prepared by administration, teachers and food service staff.

“This is a good idea. It helps kids find their way around the school before everybody else gets here,” said freshman Joe Clavelli, adding he was looking forward to opening day.

“I’m getting to know my way around better,” agreed Jon Buske, a fellow freshman. “I’m going around finding out where my classes are going to be.”

Matthew Glenn took time out to sign up for the OHS Sailing Club.

“I just have to send in my Redbook and I’ll have my (sailing) license,” he said. “I’m also a member of the Navy Sea Cadets in Oswego.”

Cassy Crisafulli, a member of the Class of 2011, was busy taping photos and other mementos inside her locker as freshmen swarmed around her trying their combinations for the first time.

“Me and my friends are decorating our lockers. I’ve got stuff from the prom and other events like the fair,” she explained.

“I can find my way around the school. I’m ready for opening day,” said Kennedy Singletary.

Another freshman was also ready to go. A member of the OHS Marching Buccaneers Band for the last two years, she was already familiar with the school.

Not everyone shared their optimism, however.

Looking up from the pile of notes and papers on the table before him in the cafeteria, one member of the Class of 2014 said, “I just want to get through the first week without getting lost.”
