OSWEGO – The Oswego Fire Department is looking for the best local candidates to fill future vacancies. Over the next 5 years, the department will need to replace approximately 20 positions due to retirements. Taking the NYS Civil Service written exam is the first step in the hiring process. While the written exam is being held on March 1st, the last day to apply is Monday, January 27, 2025.
Interested applicants must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma, NYS drivers license, and be a legal resident of Oswego County or a contiguous county. There is no prerequisite fire or EMS certification required to apply.
Oswego Fire Chief Paul Conzone is hoping that recent changes in hiring requirements will result in more local applicants. “In the past, we have had to recruit from a larger area in order to maintain a large applicant pool. The elimination of the prerequisite EMS certification will result in more localized applicants and better positions us to hire local people for these jobs. When a major emergency occurs in the City of Oswego, we rely on our off-duty personnel to report to work immediately to assist our Firefighters that are already working. We intend on hiring the best local candidates that have the right mix of character, competency, and willingness to learn the trade of Firefighting. We hope to see some familiar faces during the interview process.”
