Mayor Barlow Proposes Free Public Wi-Fi Throughout Downtown Oswego

OSWEGO, NY – Mayor Barlow announced today (June 2) his proposal to implement free public Wi-Fi throughout downtown Oswego, highlighting the need of internet access in order to modernize downtown and make it more attractive to residents, visitors and the SUNY community.

“In an effort to enhance our downtown, modernize our community and assist our local small businesses, I am proposing to implement free public Wi-Fi throughout our downtown. This will further attract our residents, visitors and college community to not only visit downtown, but actually socialize and congregate downtown. In restaurants, coffee shops and community areas, people look for access to the internet and providing this service is nothing short of providing an essential community amenity to help add to our re-surging downtown, “ the mayor said.

The city of Oswego continues to help promote and enhance the downtown Oswego area as it competes for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative and capitalize on the recent growth of downtown in recent years.

“This initiative is conveniently timed as we talk about competing for downtown revitalization funding and is another step the city of Oswego can take to modernize and become more attractive to working professionals and prospective residents. This advancement will surely help our local restaurants, coffee shops and other establishments throughout downtown as we provide an important service to our residents,” the mayor said.

Mayor Barlow will pitch the idea to the Common Council for approval at the next committee meeting on Monday, June 6, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

  1. Why not skip the committee meeting and save time. Every time Mayor barlow ask for anything in committee the council approves it. So just take your idea of WiFi downtown Oswego to the council. Would save a lot of time that way. You all know they will say ok and good idea. No idea how this will take place but the mayor thinks that is want is needed to help downtown again. Keep guessing mr mayor sooner or later you will get an idea that will work.

  2. Free Wi-fi sevice is already available at no cost to the businesses to offer to the public at no cost, if the businesses already are TIme warner customers. I hope the city will not incur any expense by implementing this service when it is already available for free.
