Storm Sparks Power Outages

OSWEGO COUNTY, NY – An overnight storm has knocked power out for approximately 2,000 National Grid customers in Oswego County.

As of 6:30 a.m., nearly 1,800 customers in Oswego County were without power, according to the National Grid Web site. By 7:30 a.m., that number had dropped to 1,365 customers. The company estimates that power will be restored to most by 9:30 a.m.

The bulk of those outages centered in the Village of Central Square and town of Hastings, where 637 customers were in the dark at 6:30 a.m. The outages in Central Square prompted a district-wide hour delay for the start of the school day. Service was restored to most customers in that area by 7:30 a.m.

The second highest number of outages was reported in the city of Fulton, where 433 customers were without power this morning. Police said some downed wires resulted in problems with traffic signals.

“We have some traffic signals without power at four intersections,” Deputy Police Chief Thomas Abelgore said.

“We’ve set up portable stop signs and flares at those intersections,” he said.

Abelgore noted that National Grid is in the city and working to restore service. Police received no other reports of damages, he said.

“Hopefully, it will be back up soon,” he said.

A spokesperson for Oswego County’s E-911 center said that the storm did not result in a flood of calls around the county.
“We have a few power outages reported because of the storm,” the spokesperson said. He noted, however, that there were no accidents or fires reported because of the weather.

“We had a few alarm calls (because of power outages),” he said. “But other than that, it has been pretty quiet.” missing or outdated ad config
