SUNY Oswego Students Attend The Farmers’ Market

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Farmers’ Market was bustling Thursday evening, despite temperature being in the mid 90s.

The heat and humidity didn’t deter Oswegonians from purchasing their favorite fruits, vegetables and sweets or just meeting their friends downtown.

Thursday was SUNY Oswego night at the market and many college students were among the dozens of market-goers.

Ashley Wescott a senior from Syracuse, Diana Pschierer a senior from Rochester, Brittany Petersen a junior from Red Creek and Jenny Watson also a junior from Sullivan County came together for a fun time together.

It was Watson’s first time at the market.

“It’s great,” she said. “I like it.”

Wescott is no stranger to the market. Thursday was her second visit.

“It’s good to see what the community has to offer. It definitely has a lot to offer,” she said.

Pschierer said that her favorite food at the market was chocolate covered strawberries and cookie dough.

The other girls agreed.

Desiree Wilcox, a senior from Utica, attended the market with her friend, Podie Sliski, to get some fresh fruit.

It was Wilcox’s first visit.

“It’s good,” she said as she explored the fruit selection vendors had to offer.

Corinne Smith was shopping for some sweets.

She found some cookies that suited her taste and then went off to check out the jewelry on display at the market.

Representatives from the Future Alumni Network were at the market promoting Green and Gold Day, which takes place Friday.

Juniors Amy Lalonde, Amy Angelini and Cydni Williams were tending to the booth promoting the event.

It is an event for the campus, but also everyone in the community, Lalonde explained.

The day coincides with National College Colors Day.

As far as the turn out Thursday night, Lalonde said, “A lot of little kids came over for candy. And, a lot of alumni from town come by to ask us what we’re doing here, what our majors are, and how campus life is.”

Located in downtown Oswego on West First Street, between Bridge and Oneida streets, the market offers a great selection of fresh produce, with new items and vendors added weekly as more produce comes into season.

You’ll also find a wide variety of home made baked goods and delicacies, honey, maple syrup, and plenty of arts and crafts along with other crowd favorites such as fresh squeezed lemonade, fried dough, Italian sausage and more.

Electronic transactions such as credit, debit or food stamp cards can be accommodated at the chamber’s market booth as customers may purchase tokens that function as cash within the market.

The market is held Thursdays from 4 – 8 p.m. and features live entertainment each week through Sept. 30.
