Susan McBrearty Announces Candidacy For First Ward Councilor

OSWEGO – After thirty years of working, volunteering, and raising children in Oswego, Susan McBrearty is running for Common Council in the First Ward.

Calling this a “critical time” for the city, McBrearty says Oswego needs to maximize the opportunity presented by the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and implement a carefully considered waterfront development project.

She is pleased to see the city recognize the First Ward’s value as a community resource. McBrearty intends to ensure that “any development be respectful of the residential qualities of the ward and retain public ownership of, and access to, the waterfront.”

Although this is her first time in politics, community involvement is nothing new to McBrearty. She is the president of the Oswego Bookmobile Board of Directors, which promotes childhood literacy, has volunteered at the Oswego YMCA, and along with her neighbors is coordinating a Pride Grant project with the Oswego Renaissance Association this year.

Inspired by seeing neighbors coming together to beautify the city and take pride in the place they call home, she intends to foster this spirit while representing the First Ward.

A graduate of SUNY Oswego, McBrearty and her husband, Phil, have raised two children in the city of Oswego.

As an active volunteer and a supporter of her children’s sports and music activities while also working full-time at Lowe’s, McBrearty understands what it takes to make ends meet, stay on top of tax payments, raise children, and maintain a household in the city of Oswego.

McBrearty wants to see the city continue its recent progress toward strengthened code enforcement and a modernized winter parking plan, in addition to adopting thoughtful long-term strategies for economic development. Securing future energy resources, she says, would enhance the city’s ability to retain the businesses that have provided steady work to the community and to attract new employers to Oswego.

“I am excited to be entering local politics. I feel this is a critical time for the city as we work to maximize the support we have gained from the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and embark on a comprehensive waterfront development project. As a resident of the First Ward, I feel it has been an underutilized resource for the city,” she said. ” I also hope to ensure that any development be respectful of the residential qualities of the First Ward and retain public ownership of, and access to, the waterfront.”
